Tuesday is “Grievance Day” in Sag Harbor, the day when local property owners can go to Village Hall to complain that their homes or businesses are overassessed for tax purposes.
Assessments are set by each town in Suffolk. Many villages use town records to determine property values, which means those residents must file complaints with the town assessor; they can also go to the town “Grievance Day” in May.
Nassau County has a single county assessor.
Residents of villages across Long Island can call their village halls to find out whether they are having a “Grievance Day” next week.
Sag Harbor, which is split between Southampton and East Hampton towns, decides its own valuation, with the village board acting as an independent board of assessment.
Village residents who think their properties are overassessed and believe they are paying more in taxes than they should can go to the Village Municipal Building, 55 Main St., from 1 to 5 p.m. They must bring adequate documentation of their claim.
Residents can also mail three copies of a state grievance form to the village. The RP-524 form is on the State Office of Real Property Service website at www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/current_forms/orpts/rp524_fill_in.pdf.
Filling out the four-page form requires information such as the tax map or section/block/lot number, which can be found on the most recent tax bill or in village records.
