Hamptons travelers will wait for smoother ride

For drivers in the Hamptons, smooth riding on Montauk Highway will have to wait another year.

State Department of Transportation officials had planned to mill and resurface the busy two-lane road between the east side of Southampton Village and Montauk Point, a distance of about 32 miles.

But they recently told State Assemb. Fred W. Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) that they do not have the funds to begin the work until fiscal 2012-13.

“Our crews have noticed the development of some new potholes along the roadway, which are being filled on a regular basis as schedules permit,” Subimal Chakraborti, the state DOT’s regional director, wrote to Thiele.

He suggested that drivers who encounter potholes call the department’s toll-free pothole hotline at 800-POTHOLE.
