A planned expansion at the Mayfair Shopping Center in Commack will be discussed tonight at a public hearing before the Town of Smithtown planning board.

The shopping center’s owner, Levin Management Corp., of Plainfield, N.J., is proposing a 3,568-square-foot addition to the mall on Jericho Turnpike, which includes more than a dozen chain stores and restaurants. The hearing will start at about 8 at the town senior center, 420 Middle Country Rd.

The expansion is expected to house a restaurant, town planning director Frank DeRubeis said. A spokeswoman for Levin Management said she had no information on the proposal.

The addition would be attached to an existing building on the northeast section of the property, near Verbena Drive, DeRubeis said. The mall and nearby homes were built in the 1960s as part of a planned community, he said.

The mall owners have received a parking variance for the expansion from the town board of zoning appeals, DeRubeis said.
