The Hempstead Fire Department donated two bicycles to a local elementary school last Friday.

Chief Inspector Jeffrey Spencer said every year the department tries to do something for local children for the holidays. This year, after being inspired by the respectfulness of the Hempstead children who visit the firehouse, he said the department decided to give bicycles to one boy and one girl from the Franklin Elementary School.

The department will choose which students will receive the bikes based on an essay contest it is holding. Students are being asked to write a paper on the importance of doing something nice for someone else.

Spencer said the Hempstead Bike Shop donated a men’s 10-speed mountain bike and a women’s 5-speed mountain bike, each valued at $220. They are on display at the school as motivation for students to write an essay.

The winners will be selected next week.
