Hempstead holds crime seminars for seniors

Hempstead Town officials have announced 15 crime prevention seminars for senior citizens.

Officials from the town’s Department of Public Safety will offer safety tips to seniors, part of a campaign to help them avoid being the victims of burglaries. The free seminars will educate seniors about what to watch for, what to avoid and how to protect themselves from criminals.

“I urge all senior citizens to take advantage of this free educational safety seminar,” Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement. “Simple prevention measures that will be discussed during the seminars can protect our residents and keep them out of harm’s way.”

The effort follows a well-publicized rash of such burglaries targeting seniors. The victims were lured away from their home’s entrance by one thief’s friendly small talk while an accomplice slipped in to loot the house.
