Hempstead OKs hiring 3 new cops

The Hempstead Village board of trustees has unanimously approved the hiring of three new police officers.

Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr., joined by the board and Hempstead Police Chief Joseph Wing, swore in the new hires during the board’s meeting Tuesday night at Village Hall. They welcomed Officers Gregory Fagan, Matthew Drew and Matthew Basmagy to the police force.

None of the three, who officially began their employment as village officers on Wednesday, is a village resident. No residents were on the waiting list, Wing said.

The officers, who have no prior law enforcement experience, will attend the police academy starting Monday. They will start serving the village after graduation six months later, Wing said.

These new hires bring the current police force to 122 sworn officers, Wing said.
