Hempstead Town is celebrating India Republic Day this week.
India Republic Day is a national holiday in India that recognizes the country’s liberation from British rule. It will be observed throughout India on Saturday.
Hempstead held its 10th annual India Republic Day ceremony on Tuesday night. The event was sponsored by the Indian American Forum and included an awards ceremony and traditional Indian dancing, music and food.
The town’s India Republic Day awards went to Harendra V. Singh, president of Bethpage-based Singh Hospitality Group, and Parveen Chopra, a Baldwin Harbor resident who was the first Indian-American to serve as commissioner of the Nassau County Human Rights Commission.
“Indian-Americans have contributed much to our society, and it is important that we celebrate their achievements and values on this special occasion,” Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement.
India’s flag will be raised over Hempstead Town Hall on Friday.
