Between congratulatory handshakes and hugs, with the roar of applause from the pep rally still ringing in his ears, George W. Hewlett High School senior Nicholas Belluccia stood before his classmates with a smile on his face, still blissfully shocked that he was selected homecoming king of the 2013-14 school year.

The 17-year-old president of the high school’s robotics club said he spent much of his high school career shooting public relations videos about robotics.

“I’m usually behind the lens, not in front of it,” he said from his seat in a blue-and-white convertible as it drove him and his queen down Broadway, with hundreds of Hewlett students, faculty and staff cheering them on during the homecoming parade Saturday.

His queen, 17-year-old Hewlett senior Emily Tedesco, a varsity cheerleader, said she was stunned to learn her classmates selected her.

“It’s a huge honor. This is so amazing,” she said. “I was named princess as a freshman, so this is a great way to start and end my high school career.”

Belluccia and Tedesco were among the hundreds of Hewlett students to participate in this year's board-games themed homecoming. Each class was well-represented during the parade; freshmen marched with a "Clue" banner and the Sophomore class walked with a "Monopoly" sign. Juniors chose "Risk," and the senior class went with "Candy Land."

Hewlett's color guard, marching band and varsity cheerleading squad also marched in the parade, along with members of the school's homecoming court.

Belluccia said it was a new experience for him.

“I’m not used to being the center of attention," Belluccia laughed. "It’s pretty neat.”
