Hicksville site added to Superfund program

A contaminated site in Hicksville has been added to the state Superfund program by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The state said the Metco property, at 325 Duffy Ave., presents a significant threat because it had been used for light manufacturing, metalworking, machining, metal finishing and metal-spraying that contaminated the ground with metals and chlorinated volatile organic compounds.

The Superfund program, formally known as the Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Program, identifies, investigates and cleans up sites where the disposal of hazardous waste may present a threat to public health or the environment.

The state said additional investigation is needed to determine the nature and extent of the contamination and the danger it poses.
