Jumping up and down in a bouncy castle made for the perfect afternoon for Long Beach’s Juliana Harvey, 4, and her sister Taylor, 3.
They couldn’t stop smiling, and neither could their grandmother, Karen Kemp, who was happy she brought them to the fourth annual Family Fun Day hosted by the Hofstra University athletics department.
The event, held at Hofstra’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, was attended by hundreds of people looking for fun family time followed by basketball action. The Family Fun Day festivities were followed by the Hofstra women’s team playing against North Carolina-Wilmington.
The event included two bouncy houses, a New York Islanders slap shot booth, spinning wheel games and concessions.
Family Fun Day was created in an effort to create awareness about the women’s basketball program and bring families together in a fun way.
Melissa Keane, of Seaford, decided to turn Family Fun Day into a birthday celebration for her 9-year-old daughter, Sarah.
“My daughter likes basketball, and this is very affordable,” Keane said. “We brought three of her friends and cousin and they can enjoy the bouncy houses and watch a basketball game. They are having a great time.”
Paul Stessel, of Hewlett, brought his 11-year-old-niece Sophie Riegel. She is a huge fan of the Hofstra women’s basketball team.
“I am so happy to be here,” Sophie said. “I am their biggest fan. I have been in their locker room three times. I wrote the coach telling her how much I loved the team and she said I could meet them.”
