Hofstra to hold Latino media event

Dozens of journalists, journalism students and community members on Saturday will discuss the growth of the region’s Hispanic community and its coverage in news media at the Latino Media Conference at Hofstra University.

The gathering, now in its second year, seeks to bring together those who produce and follow newspapers, websites and radio and television programs focusing on Long Island’s Hispanic population, said Mario Murillo, the conference’s director and chair of the Radio, Television and Film Department at Hofstra’s School of Communication.

“These publications and programs are hyperlocal organizations that speak directly to a growing segment of the community and play an important function in disseminating information,” Murillo said.

The conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Breslin Hall in the southern part of campus, off Fulton Avenue.

The keynote speaker will be journalist and author Juan Gonzalez, expected to speak at 11 a.m.
