On-leash dog walking soon might be allowed in more Huntington Town parks, after the town board unanimously authorized a code change to allow it in approved locations.
Now the town’s Huntington Trails Committee and the Parks and Recreation Department will look at sites where on-leash dog walking might be permitted, town officials said.
About a half-dozen people spoke at a public hearing last month in favor of the resolution, sponsored by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.
The town recently completed a pilot project at Frazer Drive Park in Greenlawn, and on-leash dog walking now is permanently permitted there. The pilot — which aimed to increase safety through the presence of dog-walkers — was approved in 2011 after a 17-year-old girl was raped and robbed in a secluded area of the park in 2008.
