The Huntington Chamber of Commerce is launching its first cash mob Thursday in Huntington Village in what it expects will be a monthly event to help support local businesses and bring attention to the area as a retail destination.

Pat Grant, chair of the chamber’s village merchants committee, said Value Drugs, at 349 New York Ave., will be the target of the cash mob, which will start at 6 p.m.

Grant said Value Drugs was chosen because owner Peter Pastorelli Jr., is a “huge supporter” of the chamber and its “Buy Local” campaign.

Participants will receive 20 percent discounts, and refreshments will be served. Participants are asked to spend $20 or more.

“We’ve gotten commitments from about 40 people -- we’re hoping to see a really large crowd,” Grant said. “Hopefully it’ll grow in popularity.”

In the future, Grant said, merchants will be selected randomly via a lottery.

As with other cash mobs, the group will also head to a local eatery, though that establishment likely won’t be announced until Wednesday.

Last month, a cash mob event was held in the Village of Bellport, with more than 100 people showing up.

Call the chamber at 631-423-6100 for more information. No reservations are required.
