Huntington firehouse hosts 'Shed the Meds'

Huntington residents who wish to get rid of old prescription drugs can drop them off Saturday at the Huntington Fire Department.

The “Shed the Meds” event, co-sponsored by Assemb. James Conte (R-Huntington Station) and Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset), will be held at the firehouse at 1 Leverich Place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be overseen by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Event organizers said the disposal is a way to keep the drugs out of the water supply, as well as away from those who shouldn’t be using them.

“Prescription-drug abuse is a growing problem on Long Island, and by properly disposing of these medications we can work to keep these drugs out of the wrong hands while helping to protect the environment,” Conte said in a statement.
