When Logan Wolf and his mother, Erika Lorig-Wolf, passed by Stimson Middle School on the way home from the Huntington YMCA on Tuesday, he knew there was going to be a fair there that day. He said to his mother, "You're going to take me, right?"
Wolf, 3, got his wish, and his family joined the crowds of people that had come to the first night of the Huntington Manor Fire Department’s annual fair, which will continue through Saturday. The fair's hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 7-11 p.m., Friday from 7-11:30 p.m., and Saturday from 5-11 p.m.
Held to raise funds for the fire department's sports teams, the fair features rides, children's games, casino games, food and drink vendors scattered throughout, and live music.
Vincent Bifano, chairman of the department's fair committee, loves the smiles the fireworks bring to everyone's faces and said the fire department benefits from this event beyond fundraising purposes.
"One of the big pluses is that it gives us a chance to mingle with the community," he said.
Wendley Jean-Baptiste has come to the fair with his family every year and likes to go on his favorite ride, the Super Shot.
"It goes up high and goes down really fast," said Jean-Baptiste, 11, of Huntington.
First time fair-goers Shanice Edward, 14, of Wheatley Heights, and her friends loved the Zipper, a ride that flips, twists and twirls its passengers.
Bifano said the fair seems to grow every year in popularity and since moving its location from the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington to Stimson Middle School in 2003, has acquired a larger space, enabling the fair to contain more rides and other attractions.
Fair enthusiast Domenique Calderon,18, of Huntington, attended the fair on Tuesday with her boyfriend Peter Peranzo, 20 of Massapequa, but loved it so much that she plans on returning.
Said Calderon: “I’ll probably come back every day.”
