Island Park former Cibro site eyed for $60M development

Developers are looking to turn a former Island Park oil storage and distribution site into a $60-million, 172-unit housing development with a mix of apartments and condominiums.

The Harbor Isle development plan — formally called the Battery at Harbor Isle & Avalon Yacht View — will be the focus of a meeting Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Orens Middle School, 150 Trafalgar Blvd. in Island Park.

The Island Park Chamber of Commerce and Island Park Civic Association are hosting the meeting.

“We had decided we should bring the developers to Island Park to hold a meeting here, so they can outline their plans to the residents here,” said Glenn J. Ingoglia, president of the Island Park Chamber of Commerce, adding that reaction to the plan has been mixed, with some residents raising concerns about traffic.

Farmingdale-based Posillico Development, LLC and Virginia-based Avalon Bay Communities Inc., which has an office in Melville, have partnered to develop the former Cibro facility on Washington Avenue in the Harbor Isle section of Island Park, an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead. The plan calls for Avalon to build 140 rental apartment units and Posillico to build 32 condos near the water with boat slips.

The 11-acre property has been vacant for more than a decade and is part of the New York State Brownfield program, which seeks to clean up toxic waste sites. The developers would foot the estimated $9-million cleanup of the site.
