K-9 unit dogs out when kennel crushed

For two of Suffolk’s finest, Sunday morning was a good time to be out of the house.

Lucky for Ace and Rudy, two German shepherds that are part of the Suffolk Police Department’s K-9 unit, they weren’t in their backyard kennel when Tropical Storm Irene swept through. A giant maple tree came crashing down onto the kennel while the dogs were inside their human family’s home in Strong’s Neck.

“It just crushed the kennel,” said Susan Michaels, whose husband, Kenneth Michaels, is a Suffolk police officer and keeps the dogs at home, per department protocol.

Rudy’s first day of work at the Suffolk police department was on Sept. 11, 2001, and he’s named after former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. On Tuesday, Rudy, who retired last year, lolled in the shade in the Michaelses’ backyard while Ace was at work.

Rudy panted and kept a calm gaze on the tree that destroyed his doghouse.

“It was a pretty good tree,” Susan Michaels said with a smile.
