Two fifth-grade students at Franklin School in Hempstead were presented with bicycles Friday from the Hempstead Fire Department.

Zachary Clarke received a 10-speed bicycle and Monae Campbell received a five-speed bicycle for winning an essay contest on why it’s important to do nice things for others.

Chief Insp. Jeffrey Spencer said every year the department tries to do something for local children for the holidays. This year, after being inspired by the respectfulness of the Hempstead children who visit the firehouse, he said the department decided to give the bicycles.

The bicycles were provided to the department by the Hempstead Bike Shop, which donated one bicycle and sold the other at half price.
