TODAY IN NY HISTORY
It was exactly 110 years ago today that the Interborough Rapid Transit, the IRT, opened in New York City. Subway and bus fare was set at one nickel.
Oct. 27, 1972 also marked a milestone for a New York hockey rivalry. It was the first time the Islanders beat the Rangers with a score of 3-2.
And on this date in 1986, the New York Mets won the 83rd World Series, beating the Boston Red Sox four games to three, and Long Island native and shock jock Howard Stern began broadcasting his self-titled radio show in El Paso, Texas.
