After major public and political pressure, the proposed weekday elimination of Long Island Rail Road service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport is being dropped, state Sen. Brian Foley and MTA sources said Friday.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Jay Walder reconsidered the planned discontinuance of the weekday service, Foley said. Walder gave him the news Friday.

"Obviously it's important news. It's good news for that line," said Foley (D-Blue Point). "They need to find ways to cut costs, but this was an unwise proposal. I firmly believe that this line's ridership will grow as time moves forward."

However, service on non-summer weekends still will be eliminated, an MTA source said.
