The Long Beach Martin Luther King Center will hold an open house and launch party for its new annex facility Thursday.
The annex, called the Long Beach MLK Multipurpose Center, will host visitors from noon to 5 p.m. It is at 88 East Pine St. in Long Beach.
The facility will provide some of the services that were available at the Long Beach Martin Luther King Center, which is around the corner, organizers said. The MLK Center is being renovated after being damaged by superstorm Sandy and could be open within two months, city officials have said.
“Our children have been without after-school homework help and recreational activities since November 2012 and are anxious to return,” said event organizers in a statement.
The annex probably will be open early the week of March 3, said James Hodge, chairman of the board of directors for Long Beach Martin Luther King Center Inc., which runs the facility.
“It’s going to be a center of the community,” Hodge said.
The annex is a permanent new facility that will remain open after the main MLK Center reopens, Hodge said. It is in a former home.
