This weekend's RXR Long Island Marathon events are expected to draw thousands of participants and observers amid heightened security even though it will be less stringent than last year's races, which followed the bombings at the Boston Marathon, Nassau County officials said Thursday.
"While no specific threat exists, the Nassau County Police Department has put forth enhanced security measures for the safety of the . . . participants, spectators and all members of our community," County Executive Edward Mangano said, calling the marathon "one of the Island's most exciting athletic events."
Events include a Fun Run, and 1-mile and 5k races on Saturday, and the 26.2-mile marathon, half-marathon and 10k on Sunday. The marathon will begin at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale and end at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
Road closures on Saturday are:
Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. The stretch from Merrick Avenue to Earle Ovington Boulevard will close at 8 a.m.
Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard south of Commercial Avenue, from 7:30 to 10 a.m.
The Meadowbrook Parkway exits and entrances to and from Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and Eisenhower Park exits, 7:45 until 10 a.m.
On Sunday, the closures are:
Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, 7:15 to 9:30 a.m. The stretch from Merrick Avenue to James Dolittle Boulevard will close at 5 a.m.
Merrick Avenue north of Hempstead Turnpike, 7:30 to 9:45 a.m.
Old Country Road from Post Avenue to School Street, and School Street from Old Country Road to Railroad Avenue, 7:40 to 10 a.m.
Salisbury Park Drive and Post Avenue from Railroad Avenue to Jericho Turnpike, 7:50 to 10:30 a.m.
Railroad Avenue, 7:50 to 10 a.m.
Jericho Turnpike eastbound from Post Avenue to Brush Hollow Road, 7:50 to 11 a.m.
Brush Hollow Road (south of Wantagh Parkway stays open), 7:50 to 11:30 a.m.
Carman Avenue from Old Country Road to Nottingham Road, 7:50 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wantagh Parkway, 7:50 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Northern State Parkway exits to Post Avenue and Wantagh Parkway will open after 3 p.m.
The Meadowbrook Parkway exits and entrances to and from Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and Eisenhower Park exits will be closed, 5 to 10 a.m.
Eisenhower Park's Boulevard will not allow through traffic from 8 to 10 a.m., but the Hempstead Turnpike entrance is open all day.
Roads may be closed earlier, may remain closed longer, or may reopen sooner, officials said.
