GRAPHIC STATUE PROPOSAL. The Old Westbury Planning Board is expected to consider a proposal to allow a graphic 33-foot-tall statue that was installed without proper approvals on a historic estate. PILOT KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

A single-engine plane crashed into Long Island Sound on Monday morning, about seven nautical miles -- or, about eight miles -- north of Mattituck Inlet, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley confirmed one person, identified only as a male pilot, was dead.

TRAFFIC AND TRANSIT

LIRR. Starting Monday, the elevator at the Bellmore train station will be out of service for about one week for door repair. Elevator service is available at the nearby Merrick and Seaford stations.

Expect Monday to be partly cloudy and breezy with a high of 84 degrees, then, dropping to a low of 72 degrees tonight. Tuesday's forecast is predicted to be partly cloudy, with a high of 84 degrees, then dropping to a low of 73 degrees at night with a chance of thunderstorm.
