Malverne farm marks Honey Bee Day

Grossmann’s Farm in Malverne will present the documentary film “Vanishing of the Bees” Thursday in honor of National Honey Bee Day.

The film will be shown outdoors at 7 p.m. at the farm, 480 Hempstead Ave. The event is a fundraiser to support educational programs about local food and sustainable agriculture at the 5.2-acre certified-organic vegetable farm, which Nassau County acquired last year through the county's Environmental Bond Act.

The film explores the mysterious disappearance of honeybee populations around the world. The co-director and co-producer of the film, Maryam Henein, will be present to answer questions after the screening. National Honey Bee Day, which was observed Saturday, was launched by beekeepers two years ago to build awareness of the industry.

Filmgoers are are asked to bring folding chairs and picnic blankets for seating as well as a dish featuring honey, though it is not required. In the event of inclement weather, the film will be shown indoors at the farm.
