With an agreement on Monday night’s board of trustees agenda, Massapequa Park will finalize its donation of World Trade Center steel to Massapequa Public Schools for the district’s new Sept. 11, 200,1 memorial.
The village obtained the steel earlier this year from the Port Authority — one of nearly 80 Long Island organizations to do. But as officials considered building the village’s own memorial, they learned the school district needed more steel for its effort, said Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna Jr.
With the donation made several weeks ago, Massapequa Public Schools completed its memorial at Massapequa High School, featuring the twisted I-beam section raised vertically above a flower garden.
“It’s quite stunning,” said Altadonna, noting that Massapequa Park will be an official partner for the project. “And as with all of these pieces, it’s a part of our history.”
