Mastic Beach lighthouse to be dedicated

The Mastic Beach Property Owners Association will dedicate the Neighborhood Road lighthouse to Julius DeCarlo, a former caretaker of the lighthouse who died earlier this year.

A dedication ceremony will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with members of DeCarlo’s family, including his widow, Lynn, scheduled to attend, said association president Bob DeBona.

DeCarlo, a longtime member of the association and former dockmaster at the Pattersquash Creek docks, died of cancer in January. He was 66.

Lynn DeCarlo said her husband, who served in the Army during the Vietnam War, took pride in maintaining the miniature lighthouse, which is in a small park at the corner of Neighborhood and Commack roads.

“He took pride in his town and he always put his flag up,” Lynn DeCarlo said. “He loved Mastic Beach.”

A plaque honoring DeCarlo will be placed on the lighthouse.
