The Town of North Hempstead board Tuesday night voted unanimously to authorize a license agreement with the Hempstead Harbor Aero Modelers Society, which allows them to use a Port Washington field to fly model aircraft.
The group had been anxious to use the aerodrome, which had been closed for two years because of methane leaks. After the land was remediated, town officials had said the field would be open by the end of June.
Members of the group attended Tuesday’s long-awaited meeting and said they were eager to fly their model planes and helicopters in Port Washington again. The only other aerodrome in Nassau is in Wantagh.
