With 2011 just days away, many of us are pondering our New Year’s resolutions. The list will most certainly include the ever-popular vow to loose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, save money, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
I hope to lose weight in 2011 as well, but then again, that resolution has been on the top of my list since the birth of my son some four years ago! Saving money is always a biggie, too, but considering that I’ve yet to hit the winning Lotto numbers, I’m doubtful I’ll be successful in that department. So this year, I’ve chosen a more realistic and attainable resolution – to read more with my son. Thanks to the Center Moriches Free Public Library’s upcoming Parents As Reading Partners Program, it should be a breeze.
If you’re not familiar with PARP, it’s really quite simple. Beginning Monday, Jan. 3, library patrons can pick up a reading kit in the Children’s Library Room. The kit contains everything you need to participate, including a reading log, bookmark, pencil and stickers. The kits will be available until Feb. 11.
The goal is to read 20 books by March 1, the deadline for reading log submissions. Participants who reach the goal will receive a prize and be invited to attend a special performance on March 4 by children’s entertainer Darlene Graham.

Happy reading and happy New Year!
CALLING ALL BUSINESSES: The Center Moriches PTA’s annual Chinese Auction is slated for Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in the Center Moriches High School gym, 311 Frowein Rd. Last year’s auction was a huge success thanks to the overwhelming generosity of area businesses that donated items. Once again, the PTA is relying on local businesses to donate for this year’s auction. Proceeds will benefit arts in education programs.
For more information, call PTA oresident Jeanine Barr at 631-874-8251, or visit the Center Moriches Union Free School District website.
CIVIC ASSOCIATION MEETING: The Moriches Bay Civic Association will hold a special meeting 7 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the meeting room of the Center Moriches Free Public Library. At the meeting a developer will give a presentation on a change of zoning application for a parcel of land located on Montauk Highway in Moriches, just west of Cedar Avenue. The proposal is to build a women’s spa. All are invited to attend.
FREE WINTER ECOLOGY PROGRAM: The Kaler’s Pond Audubon Society invites families to an upcoming ornithology program, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., at the Center Moriches Free Public Library. Titled “Whoooo is That?,” the program will highlight the variety of owls that call Long Island their home, including screech and great horned owls. Participants will learn how to identify these birds of prey by sight and sound, and what they eat by observing the dissection of an owl pellet. All are welcome. Call 631-878-0940, for more information.
