The Town of North Hempstead has opened its fourth Project Independence location, this one at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in East Hills.
Launched in 2009, Project Independence is a town initiative that provides access to health screenings, exercise programs, support groups and educational opportunities for residents 60 and older.
The program also offers free transportation to local supermarkets and discounted taxi rides for nonemergency medical visits.
An open house will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Friday at the center, at 300 Forest Dr.
The town’s other Project Independence sites are at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park, the Great Neck Senior Center and the North Hempstead Senior Center in Port Washington.
Residents can also call the 311 town hotline to request information or services.
