Nassau County has launched an online news service that it says is a means to keep residents informed about county government.
The Nassau County News Network is a blog of news releases touting initiatives by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the county's 47 departments. It also highlights certain community events, and encourages comments.
The blog's header is fashioned to look like a newspaper, with the slogan, "Real News, Real People," but to be clear, it is not an independent operation. It's run by the county administration.
So is it news or propaganda? Let us know what you think.
Here's what Mangano press secretary Mike Martino had to say about the effort in a written statement:
“The Democrats in the County Legislature have become the Party of No, standing for censorship and tax hikes. Rather than oppose the flow of information, they should consider allowing residents the opportunity to engage in honest discussions about their government. The Nassau County News Network is another conduit for that discussion, and it is presented from the viewpoint of the administration, without partisan criticism.”
