Nassau County on Tuesday reopened 19 beaches that it had closed after bacteria-laden runoff from rainstorms on Sunday and Monday made the water unfit for bathing.

The county Health Department said it had closed the beaches as a precaution.

Officials had been waiting for two tidal cycles to cleanse the water sufficiently before reopening the beaches.

On Monday, Suffolk County issued advisories against swimming at 66 beaches, also due to bacteria levels from stormwater runoff.

Those advisories remained in effect Tuesday.
