LIPA and National Grid held their annual emergency preparedness drill yesterday at Nassau County's Office of Emergency Management headquarters in Bethpage.
The exercise, which was monitored by the Red Cross along with county and state emergency management agencies, focused on speeding up the time it takes to respond to outages and restorate services.
Still shaken from the tornado-esque storm that rocked North Hempstead last month, LIPA and National Grid are also aiming to update customers more quickly. LIPA says it has implemented a new phone line devoted to response, and it will upgrade its storm center web site over the next few weeks.
The utility also plans to implement text-messaging and smart-phone communications soon.
