About 3,000 Long Island Power Authority customers were without power in Suffolk and Nassau counties this afternoon, including 290 who are still waiting for power to be restored in Hicksville.
In Hicksville, 767 customers reported losing power after LIPA was forced to disconnect a line while repair crews trimmed tree limbs that were interfering with the line and causing sparks, said Vanessa Baird-Streeter, a LIPA spokeswoman. She said power will be restored to the remaining customers between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The largest outage was in Deer Park, where 2,262 customers were without power for about an hour due to a failed surge protector, Baird-Streeter said. Power was restored to those customers by 1 p.m.
About 20 outages were also reported in Hempstead and East Islip, and less than five each were reported in Southampton, North Hempstead and Huntington.
