A proposed affordable-housing development in Kings Park drew nary a word of opposition Wednesday night at a Smithtown Planning Board meeting.
Developers want to build a 36-unit apartment complex on Indian Head Road on a 3.1-acre parcel now zoned for townhouses.
The project will need approval for a zoning change from the Town Board.
At a public hearing Wednesday night, Vincent Pizzulli, an East Meadow attorney representing developers Indian Head Family Llc, said the apartments are designed for young people and others who cannot afford to buy a home on Long Island.
“We believe that this project will serve an underserved population in this community,” he said.
In response to questions from two people who attended the public hearing, Pizzulli said the apartments would not be supported by government subsidies and rent would be priced at “market rates.”
Planning board members said they would inspect the site before deciding whether to forward the zoning change application to the town board.
