New Hyde Park Memorial High School has expanded its effort to discourage bullying by adding seventh and eight grades to its 3-year-old “character-building” program, Principal Michael DeMartino said.
The school had already integrated character-building themes into the ninth- through 12th-grade curriculums. The seventh and eighth grades were added this school year.
DeMartino says believes bullying at New Hyde Park isn’t as big a problem as in other school districts because of the program, called “Project Wisdom.”
As part of the initiative, each school month is given a positive-reinforcement theme. For instance, last month’s theme was “Respect”; this month, it’s “Courage.” Teachers will use these themes in their lesson plans, DeMartino said.
In addition, every morning a member of the school community reads an inspirational fact during the morning announcements.
