Joey Yagoda is too young to drink, and he goes to Yale.
But the New Hyde Park native’s knowledge of a popular cocktail and his school’s archrival helped him get past his first day on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” Monday.
Yagoda, who turns 20 today and taped the episodes early last month -- as chronicled in a recent newsday.com story -- will continue his quest Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. on WABC-TV.
Yagoda is nearly halfway to the $1 million jackpot, having completed six of a possible 14 questions. He used two lifelines, one “Ask the Audience” and one “Jump the Question” (allowing him to skip a question he wasn’t sure of), and has one Jump the Question remaining.
One of the questions he breezed through asked what drink Taco Bell is combining with Mountain Dew in its new “Dewdriver” concoction. Yagoda explained the contents of a screwdriver before correctly answering orange juice.
In another show host Meredith Vieira asked Yagoda to complete the Boston accent-inspired “Pahk the cah in” before Yagoda quickly, and correctly, answered “Harvard Yard.”
“You may go to Yale, but Harvard saved your butt there,” Vieira quipped.
Yagoda’s “Millionaire Bank” is now $13,600. If he answers any of questions 7-10 incorrectly, he would leave with $1,000. He can also choose at any point during those questions not to keep guessing and leave with half his Millionaire Bank. If he makes it to the second round (questions 11-14), he’s permitted to keep his entire Millionaire Bank should he choose not to guess. If he answers a question incorrectly in the second round, he wins $25,000.
