Nonprofit gets grant for affordable homes

A Centereach-based organization has received a grant to rehabilitate affordable housing properties.

The nonprofit organization Community Development Corp. of Long Island received $135,000 from NeighborWorks America, a national network of more than 240 community development and affordable housing organizations.

The CDC said it will use the money, along with a $50,000 grant received from the TD Bank Charitable Foundation last year, to make capital improvements on 10 rental properties that the CDC operates as affordable housing for families.

Those properties are located in Patchogue, Medford, Shirley, Mastic and Centereach, said Lynne O’Leary, CDC vice president of marketing and development.

The work includes kitchen replacements, siding, floors and energy efficiency improvements, she said.

The CDC said it is one of 115 local NeighborWorks organizations receiving a total of $34.9 million in Capital Funding for the Rehabilitation of Affordable Housing grants to finance the rehabilitation of affordable housing nationwide.
