North Hempstead hazardous waste drop-off set

North Hempstead residents can dispose of hazardous waste during a Stop Throwing Out Pollutants -- S.T.O.P. -- event scheduled for Sunday in Port Washington.

The event, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., will take place at North Hempstead Beach Park, 175 West Shore Rd., in the North Lot.

Items residents can return include aerosols, pesticides, fertilizers, bulbs, lithium batteries, television sets and computers. Paints will be accepted, but only oil-based ones; latex- and water-based paints will not be accepted.

Residents can also shred and dispose of personal documents and credit cards free of charge at the event.

The town is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, a youth mentoring organization, which will accept gently used clothes, stuffed animals, electronics, bikes, toys and luggage, among other items. For these donations, residents can receive a receipt for income tax purposes.
