Nonunion employees in the Town of North Hempstead are getting a manual.
Town board members Tuesday night approved the final batch of policies — on such topics as using town vehicles, no-smoking areas, and accident prevention and reporting — and will hand out the manual to the town’s roughly 120 nonunion employees next week.
“This is part of us refining our human resources department and trying to clarify work rules for employees,” town spokesman Collin Nash said.
Many of the policies mirror those for union employees, Nash said, though he could not provide specifics.
It is the first manual of its kind for the town’s nonunion employees, he said.
The 25-page booklet includes policies detailing work hours, sick days, casual dress regulations, medical benefits, work evaluations and the town’s ethics policy. It also covers working with the public and public relations.
“Town government in North Hempstead exists to serve its citizens,” the manual reads. “Therefore good public relations are an important aspect of your job. Good public relations consist of dealing intelligently, courteously, fairly and promptly with all inquiries from citizens.”
Also during the meeting, the town board voted to accept a gift of the Mackay Estate Gate Lodge from G.A.D. Development Inc. in Great Neck.
The gate lodge at the corner of Harbor Hill and Roslyn roads once served as the entrance to the Mackay Estate in what is now the Village of East Hills.
The agreement said the town “will not bear, assume or undertake any of the financial costs associated with the removal, storage, repair, transportation or any other costs associated with its restoration.”
