More senior citizens could get property tax breaks in Northport, after the board of trustees voted to increase the income level criteria for the village’s tax exemption.

Once the legislation is filed with the state’s Secretary of State, village seniors who have an income of $29,000 or less will be eligible for a 50-percent property tax reduction. Before, they had to make $19,500 or less.

The board also approved changes to criteria for smaller tax breaks.

Seniors making more than $29,000 and less than $30,001 will qualify for a 45 percent reduction;

More than $30,000 and less than $31,001, 40 percent;

More than $31,000 and less than $32,001, 35 percent;

More than 32,000 and less than $32,901, 30 percent;

More than $32,900 and less than $33,801, 25 percent;

More than $33,800 and less than $34,701, 20 percent;

More than $34,700 and less than $35,601, 15 percent;

More than $35,600 and less than $36,501, 10 percent;

More than $36,500 and less than $37,401, 5 percent.

Deputy village clerk Cathy Romanczyk said the village hasn’t increased the exemption in years and now it is line with the Town of Huntington’s requirements.

Seniors’ incomes are offset by all medical and prescription drug expenses not reimbursed or paid for under insurance.
