The Ocean Beach board of trustees has voted on a monetary settlement with an architecture firm after they decided to break a contract with the group.
The Fire Island Village Board at its regular meeting Saturday voted 5-0 to pay $89,000 to BBS Architects & Engineers of Patchogue. The firm was hired several years ago to help renovate and restore the village’s aging ferry terminal, Mayor James Mallott said. But after superstorm Sandy uprooted the decking, destroyed the bulkheading and bathroom, and flooded the police station that are part of the ferry terminal, the village decided to change direction on the project, dramatically altering its scope of work and seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to rebuild.
“The storm came along and changed everything,” Mallott said. “BBS was under contract, though, so we came to a settlement of $89,000, a little more than 50 percent of what we owed them” for design work on the renovation.
Mallott said the permits taken out for the project are valid and still belong to the village, but it can’t use the firm’s design in its re-envisioning of the ferry terminal.
In other post-Sandy updates, clerk-treasurer Steven Brautigam said the village has requested $2.6 million in FEMA reimbursements after damage caused by the Oct. 29 storm, and has so far received $536,000 from the federal agency and $1 million from insurance claims.
In addition, Brautigam said there are 17 post-storm projects on village infrastructure and buildings expected to cost roughly $10 million that will be rolled out across the next several years.
As part of ongoing preparations for future storms, the village board also voted Saturday to install a 250-kilowatt generator at its water/sewer plant for $190,000.
