Officials target abandoned N. Bellport homes

Brookhaven officials have announced the cleanup of three North Bellport homes littered with debris and generating complaints from neighbors.

The three abandoned homes — at 520 Bourdois Ave., 713 Davidson Ave. and 955 Walker Ave. — will be boarded up and secured, town officials said. They said investigators found crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia in the Bourdois Avenue house in January.

The town will charge the owners of the properties for the cost of the work, Supervisor Mark Lesko said.

The town needed a street sweeper to remove the debris outside the Bourdois Avenue home, officials said. The Davidson Avenue home had been boarded up, but vandals had broken in and left it cluttered with debris, including a boat hull in the front yard, officials said. The Walker Avenue home had been cleaned by the town last year, but it subsequently became the site of illegal dumping, officials said.

“Houses like these are more than just blight,” Lesko said. “They are a breeding ground for criminal activity.” The cleanup work was performed by the town’s waste management division and Quality of Life Task Force, town officials said.
