Open mic night to feature Lakeview youth

The Save Our Sons Network will present its first open mic night Friday showcasing the talents of Lakeview’s youth.

The free event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in St. Paul’s AME Church, 453 Pershing St. in Rockville Centre. The venue was changed from the conference room of the Harold Walker Park in Lakeview to the church in order to accommodate the anticipated audience. Seating at the church is limited to 120 people.

Performers are expected to include spoken-word artists, singers, dancers, comedians and musicians. Familiar community performers will include Takeesha McCallister, Kyle Meekins, Jahlil Burke, Ayanna Besson, Kevin Cooper and Francina Smith.

A talent scout will be in the audience, said Sherwyn Besson, president of the non-profit organization hosting the event.

“We have so much talent in the community,” said Besson, whose organization mentors an estimated 45 kids. “The community rallies around music and entertainment, so this is a steppingstone for our young people to showcase their talents.”
