Upon entering the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center in Riverhead, students walked into a dining area surrounded by fish tanks, a shallow pool of stingrays and a 120,000-gallon shark tank.

Blue tang curiously peeked out through the glass at the commotion as teenagers mingled with friends, snapped photos and danced to the DJ’s playlist.

It would be a prom these students would never forget, the first time Oyster Bay High School decided to hold its junior/senior prom at the aquarium out east.

As soon as they arrived, Destiny Martinez and Kyle Whitelaw walked along the docks in the outdoor part of the aquarium, taking in the beauty of the sunset before heading inside.

“It’s a great place because it’s not the traditional area where you would be spending your prom,” said Whitelaw, 18. “You’re surrounded by nature and different kinds of animals.”

The couple loved the location, which the student body hand-picked.

“I’ve never been to this aquarium, so to come here for my prom is really cool,” said Martinez, 16. “This has fish tanks and sharks. It’s pretty exciting and honestly I couldn’t think of a better place to have our prom. There’s nothing like this place.”
