The Town of North Hempstead has temporarily lifted some penalty fees for building and plumbing work that had been done without the necessary permits.

The waiver period began on July 2 and continues through the end of December 2013 and applies in certain circumstances, such as improvements and alterations that had been started without the necessary applications and without having been inspected by a town building inspector.

The town board also changed several building department procedures, making it easier for people upgrading only the interior of their structures by not requiring an updated survey of the property.

“We urge residents to take advantage of this one-time opportunity to bring unauthorized improvements and renovations up to code,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said in a statement.
