East Hampton Village, which already has two specially lighted crosswalks on Main Street, is planning to install a third, on Newtown Lane, that would be in operation by next summer.

The special crosswalks have lights buried in the road that — when a pedestrian presses a button — start blinking brightly, catching the eye of drivers and letting them know someone is preparing to cross the street.

Since they were put in, there has not been a pedestrian accident at the two busy Main Street crossings, village officials say.

The village will be seeking a $20,000 Suffolk County grant to pay for the work, which likely would begin sometime in the fall.
