The forecast for the fifth annual Long Island Polar Dip at Amityville Village’s beach this Saturday is rain, highs in the 50s, water temperature around 45 degrees: “Almost too warm,” in the words of village trustee and noted tough guy Dennis Siry, who will participate. “It’s almost like cheating.”

The Dip benefits Camp Sunshine, a Maine retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Participants are asked to raise $100 each. Previous dips, Siry said, have drawn about 100 people.

The goal is to raise $20,000, enough to send 10 families to Camp Sunshine. More Sunshine guests come from New York than any other state and many come from Long Island according Ashley Riley, the camp’s events coordinator.

Registration is at 1 p.m. and the Dip is an hour later. For more information, visit
