The Green Team at the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in Port Jefferson has completed its “No Waste Week” challenge, with encouraging results.
The project, recently chronicled by Newsday.com, reduced lunchroom garbage by 25 percent.
Because of the Green Team recycling efforts, bins for two different types of plastics, aluminum cans and foil, clean paper and drink pouches were added alongside bins used to collect all the garbage. The drink pouch recycling works much like box tops; the school can receive money for every 500 they collect.
Green Team parent volunteers were on hand for the past two weeks training students, who are now on their own. The Student Government has also taken notice of the Green Team and has offered to help monitor lunch recycling.
