Port Jeff school ‘waste audit’ kicks off recycling effort

Students at the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in Port Jefferson got a lesson in trash on Wednesday they won’t soon forget.

Participating in the PTA’s “Green Team” waste audit, the students were tasked with sorting through a day’s worth of the school cafeteria’s trash to see how much junk isn’t being recycled.

The goal was to inspire ideas that would lead to a better schoolwide recycling program, PTA president Jill Russell said.

The next step, she said, is the addition of waste stations, where students can separate their cafeteria trash into appropriate recycling bins.
