Post office for sale in Hicksville

The U.S. Postal Service has formally listed its longtime Hicksville facility for sale, the first step in a process that could lead to the site’s redevelopment.

The 123,734-square-foot post office on West John Street was put on the market March 28, postal officials said. An asking price wasn’t indicated.

With large-scale mail processing now occurring elsewhere, postal officials have said they need a building only a tenth of the size. A location for a new, smaller post office in Hicksville is being sought.

The old site — which opened in the early 1970s — sits across the street from the hamlet’s busy transit hub, and has been subject to speculation over its potential for higher-density housing. Town of Oyster Bay officials, however, remain uncommitted to a specific use. They are awaiting a larger downtown redevelopment proposal being drawn with local civic groups.
